I just started my 1st road trip in my FJ; we traveled to Wichita for a graduation. I was kind of concerned about taking it as all I have read in other posts on other sites was how terrible the fuel mileage is. Some people have reported only 11mpg. Well my 1st leg from home to Des Moines, I got 21.87 mpg at 74 mph on the FJ's speedometer. The next leg from Des Moines I got 20.28mpg, but it is a little more hilly. After a couple consistent results, I didn't feel the need to keep track any longer. It turns out that this gets better mileage than my Yukon had is more fun to drive. I only saw 1 other FJ on the road and it was in St. Paul and was a Trails Team. Happy trails everyone.

I've logged very similar gas mileage in my FJ too. Depends on what I'm hauling tho. But, as owners, I think there's more than fuel efficiency gas a reason for buying the FJ. Reliability long term, value, ability to take us anywhere, and many more reasons.

You're correct. I didn't buy mine for that! Lol. I was surprised though when I started reading how terrible of mileage people were getting, so that's why I was surprised how well it actually did as I have only drove it about 100 miles one way at the longest before this trip.

I was reading about fuel mileage issues on the big forum. Turns out most fuel mileage issues revolve around a malfunctioning thermostat. The thermostats on FJs are notorious for failing and opening up at too low of a temperature which keeps the truck running cool and causes the ECU to dump fuel into the motor as if it was in a warm-up cycle. So, if your mileage takes a dive, look at your gauge and consider getting a new thermostat.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to keep that in mind. After a few pages of how everyone only gets between 7mpg and 11mpg, I finally shut down the computer and figured that I was in for a very expensive trip.

LOL^ Thank God that's not the case. The FJ is cool and all, but that mileage might be a deal breaker for me.

I think one of the best things to do is ensure you or someone else services the FJ regularly. Oil changes, tire balance and rotation, fluid checks and replacement, if necessary, check for leaks etc...Also,take one weekend, while we have this warm weather, with a friend and perform an in-depth inspection. Catch any issue while it's small, before it becomes a larger issue. I am fortunate I have the weekends off and I'd love to work on the trucks and meet new faces. Im always willing to learn something new.

I have gotten as high as 24 mpg with a tail wind, though I'm usually in the 20-22 range. Since the EPA est is 21 mpg for my 2010, I can't complain.
